Dental Bridge

Two teeth with a gap, prepared to receive a dental bridge to cover the gap and teeth. If you're missing teeth due to injury, decay, or other dental issues, it can impact more than just your smile. It can also affect your confidence and make social situations uncomfortable. You might even experience pain when eating or speaking. At Lifetime Dental, we understand how important a complete, healthy smile is to your overall well-being. If this sounds like you, a dental bridge may be the perfect solution.

A dental bridge is a custom-made restoration used to fill the space left by one or more missing teeth. The bridge includes one or more artificial teeth, called pontics, that are securely anchored to your natural teeth or dental implants on either side of the gap. Because they are color-matched to your surrounding teeth, bridges blend in naturally with your smile, both in appearance and function.

Getting a dental bridge starts with a visit to our office for a comprehensive oral exam. Our dental professionals will evaluate your mouth to ensure a bridge is the best solution for you. If so, we will take a precise mold of your teeth, which is sent to a specialized lab where your custom bridge will be crafted. Once it's ready, we'll schedule a follow-up appointment to place the bridge and make sure it fits comfortably and securely.

What Types of Dental Bridges Are There?

There are several types of dental bridges, but there are three that are used most often.

Traditional Dental Bridge

A traditional dental bridge is the most common type. It features one or more artificial teeth held in place by dental crowns on either side. The crowns are cemented to the natural teeth adjacent to the gap, providing a strong and durable restoration.

Cantilever Bridge

This type is similar to a traditional bridge, but it's supported by a crown on only one side. Cantilever bridges are typically used in areas where there's only one adjacent tooth available for support, such as near the back of the mouth.

Maryland Bridge

A Maryland bridge offers a more conservative approach. Instead of using crowns, it relies on a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth. While this option preserves more of your natural tooth structure, it may not be as strong as a traditional bridge, especially in areas exposed to heavy bite forces.

How Long Do Dental Bridges Last?

With proper care, dental bridges can last for many years. Bridges can remain in good condition for up to 10 years or longer. The key to longevity is maintaining excellent oral hygiene, avoiding hard or sticky foods, and keeping up with regular dental visits.

During your routine exams at Lifetime Dental, we'll monitor the fit and integrity of your bridge, clean around it thoroughly, and make any necessary adjustments. While small issues can often be repaired, more serious damage may require replacement.
